The University of Botswana (UB) and University of Maryland are proud to hold the 5th African International Conference on Statistics at the University of Botswana Conference Centre during March 19-22, 2018.The conference will be jointly organized by the Department of Statistics at the University of Botswana and by the Department of Mathematics/Statistics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). The central theme of the conference is Solutions for a Complex World: New Generation Statistics.

Who should Attend

Data sources and nature of data itself these days are rather complex, sometimes confidential, and analysis of such data sets often big in nature, require new and innovative methods. The main objective of this international conference is to bring together expert statisticians from all over the globe who will present state of the art data analysis methodologies with applications. Topics will range from dealing with big data issues, data analysis under confidentiality protection, environmental statistics, optimum design of experiments, biostatistics, drug safety and efficacy analysis, and so on. The conference presentations lasting for four days are expected to foster sharing of research findings and increased research interactions among the participants. The local statisticians from African countries would immensely benefit from such high quality level technical presentations and professional interactions with the international delegates.

The statistics graduate program at UMBC is very vibrant with several internationally renowned faculty and active research programs in many key areas of statistics and biostatistics. The stat group at UMBC took an instrumental role in successfully organizing four earlier international conferences in Africa: Senegal in 2014, Ethiopia in 2015, Cameroon in 2016 and South Africa in 2017.

This international conference is expected to bridge the gap between statisticians on two opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, to promote better connections with each other in terms of clear understanding of mutual research activities and continuation of fruitful research interaction in the future.

All the plenary, keynote and invited speakers have been chosen with a view to exposing the junior researchers and graduate student attendees to the currently active research areas and emerging applications of statistics, and to foster fruitful research collaboration.

We would also be having a Two-day Workshop on Research Support for Potential PhD Students Jointly organized by Prof M Lesaoana, University of Limpopo, South Africa and Prof DK Shangodoyin & Prof N Forcheh, University of Botswana, Botswana (18-19 March 2018).
